SPD: Officers Followed Procedure In Fatal Incident Involving EMTs

Springfield police say officers were following department policy when they deferred to medical personnel in the case of a man who later died after being restrained by the EMTs.

Those two EMTs are now facing murder charges after an autopsy determined the man, Earl Moore Jr., died from “compressional and positional asphyxia,” meaning he suffocated after being tightly restrained, face-down, on a stretcher.

The police department says the officers on hand called for medical assistance and observed the EMTs acting “indifferently” to Moore’s condition. But it says the officers are not medical professionals, and so they turned Moore’s care over to the EMTs.
