Carmax Agrees To Greater Disclosure Of Safety Info

Used car retailer Carmax has agreed to provide more consumer disclosure about vehicle safety as part of a legal settlement with Illinois and more than 30 other states.

Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul says Carmax must disclose safety recalls on the vehicles they sell, and must include links or QR codes with their online listings so that buyers can directly see the safety information. The litigation was the result of complaints by consumers that they had not gotten advance information about recalls or safety defects in cars they purchased from Carmax.

Carmax also agreed to pay a total of $1 million to settle the multi-state complaint, of which Illinois will receive just over $60,000.
