SAFE-T Act Tweaks Expected This Week

When Illinois lawmakers take up changes to the SAFE-T Act this week, one of the major issues will be how judges deal with incarcerated jail inmates when cash bail ends on January 1st.

House Speaker Chris Welch tells Politico that the law as written would not result in a mass release of prisoners on New Year’s Day, as opponents of the law have claimed. But he still expects some effort to clarify the law and the procedures on how to deal with people who are currently held on bond.

That and other “tweaks” to the law could happen Wednesday and Thursday, the two final scheduled days of the fall veto session in Springfield.
