”Blackout Wednesday” Tradition Raises Concerns

It’s becoming an increasingly common pre-Thanksgiving tradition… and one that is causing greater concern among law enforcement and health and safety professionals.

The night before Thanksgiving is often referred to as “Blackout Wednesday” or “Drinksgiving,” names which refer to the practice of getting extremely intoxicated on the night before the holiday.

The Gateway Foundation and other groups say the practice is linked to a sharp rise in driving under the influence, increasing the risk of accidents, severe injury and death. They urge anyone who plans to take part to make sure they have a sober designated driver, or to use a ride-share service.
