Illinois House Speaker Chris Welch is defending the policing and justice reform law known as the SAFE-T Act.
Critics have called for a repeal of the law that will end cash bail in Illinois on January 1, 2023. Welch says the cash bail system is unjust and needs to end.
He says the new law has undergone several revisions and he’s open to more modifications… but says those who want to repeal the SAFE-T Act also wants to repeal other rights, like marriage equality or a woman’s right to choose.
