Sheriff’s Office Obtains Body Cameras, But Putting Devices Into Service Could Take Weeks

The Sangamon County Sheriff’s office has obtained the body cameras that it will use to equip deputies and jailers in the months ahead… but it may still be several more weeks before the devices are deployed.

Sheriff Jack Campbell says he and his staff are still working through the logistics of operating the cameras and downloading and storing the footage they collect. The Illinois policing reform law passed last year requires all police to be equipped with body cameras. Campbell wants corrections officers in the county jail to wear them, too.

He’s hoping to roll them out for all personnel as early as November 1st, but no firm timeline has been set.
