Wyndham Zoning Variance Advances, Against Recommendation Of Regional Planning Staff

Springfield’s planning and zoning commission has voted in favor of a proposed zoning variance to allow the Wyndham City Centre downtown to be converted to mostly apartments, even though staff of the Regional Planning Commission recommended against the variance.

After Springfield aldermen rejected earlier proposals that called for even more apartments, a developer offered a revised proposal that would maintain 125 hotel rooms while converting 275 units to apartments. Staffers recommended against the request, saying there’s no demonstrated need for that many additional apartments.

But commission members voted six-to-three in favor of granting the variance, sending the issue back to the City Council for consideration next month.
