Local Lawmakers Survive Challengers Backed By Bailey

A Springfield lawmaker says Republican nominee for governor Darren Bailey will have some work to do to unite the GOP after a bruising primary.

Representative Tim Butler coasted to victory in Tuesday’s Republican primary over Kent Gray, who got Bailey’s endorsement because Butler supported the 2019 gas tax increase to fund infrastructure. Butler says it’s up to Bailey to show how he plans to repair the fractures in the party. He notes that Bailey was the only one of the six Republicans running for governor who did not sign a “unity pledge” before the primary. State Senator Steve McClure also survived a primary challenge from a Bailey-endorsed candidate, but says he believes the party can come together and work toward victory in November.

Meanwhile, Lisa Smith defeated Prescott Paulin in the 96th House District, and will face Representative Sue Scherer in the general election.
