Proposal Would Convert Downtown Hotel To Apartments

An iconic Springfield hotel could be converted into apartments under a zoning proposal headed to the Springfield City Council.

The Illinois Times reports that developers want to convert the 30-story Wyndham City Centre downtown into studio and one-bedroom apartments renting for $700 to $1,000 a month. That New York-based company says the project would fill a need for more residential space downtown.

But the Regional Planning Commission has recommended that the zoning change be denied, saying there is no evidence that the project would add needed housing or enhance property values.
