Grocery Sales Tax Suspension Takes Effect Friday

As Illinois families continue to battle inflation, a little bit of help will arrive later this week.

The state is suspending its one-percent sales tax on groceries for a full year, beginning with the start of the new fiscal year this Friday, July 1st. The tax reduction applies to most food items that are packaged for consumption off-site, with some exceptions, including alcoholic beverages, soft drinks, and candy.

The state estimates that the suspension of the tax through June of 2023 will save Illinois taxpayers a combined $400 million.
