License Plate Reader Cameras Already Getting Results

Even though they’re still a work in progress, Springfield’s license plate reader cameras are already getting results.

Fewer than half of the planned 84 cameras citywide have been installed and deployed, but Police Chief Ken Scarlette says the cameras have already identified and helped police locate a vehicle used by a shooting suspect. Scarlette says the cameras also led to the recovery of a vehicle that had been reported stolen four years ago.

Installation of the remaining cameras has been slowed a bit by the need for permits at intersections that are maintained by the state, rather than the city.
