State Police Wipe Out Sexual Assault Case Forensic Backlog

For the first time, Illinois State Police say they have eliminated the backlog in processing forensic evidence in sexual assault cases.

That backlog has for years hampered rape and assault investigations. As recently as 2019, more than 18-hundred  forensic cases had been pending for longer than 180 days at the state police crime lab.

Governor JB Pritzker says the agency has used updated technology and hired additional staff to ensure that all cases are processed within that statutory 180-day time frame.
