An Illinois sheriff’s deputy has been killed in the line of duty while trying to apprehend a suspected gunman.
Illinois State Police say several agencies responded to a report of man with a gun at a Galesburg gas station. Galesburg police spotted the suspect vehicle and attempted to make a traffic stop, but the vehicle took off. A Knox County deputy was attempting to place spike strips on a highway in Henry County in an effort to force the suspect vehicle to slow down… when state police say that suspect vehicle struck and killed the deputy. The vehicle then crashed a short distance away and the suspect was taken into custody after a short foot chase.
Authorities did not immediately release the name of the deputy or the suspect.
