Exemption Allows Sheriff To Appear In Uniform In Davis Campaign Ad

A new campaign ad for Congressman Rodney Davis features Sangamon County Sheriff Jack Campbell in uniform… but officials say that’s permitted, even though it wouldn’t be for other law enforcement officers.

Police are generally prohibited from appearing in uniform in support of political candidates. But as an elected official, Campbell falls under an exemption to the federal Hatch Act, allowing him to appear in uniform for political purposes.

In the ad, Davis is shown talking with Campbell as he discusses his support for additional funding for law enforcement.
