Chapin Police Chief Out Of Hospital After Being Shot

The police chief of the village of Chapin in Morgan County is now out of the hospital, weeks after being critically injured when he was shot by a suspect following a police chase.

Steven Helmich was one of the officers who responded when authorities say Daniel Payne of Tennessee fled after being pulled over near Meredosia on March 26th.

Payne allegedly led police on a chase through three counties before crashing in Brown County, where police say he got out and opened fire, striking Helmich twice. Payne is facing charges of attempted murder of a police officer.
