He was perhaps the most powerful figure in Illinois politics for decades… but now former Illinois House Speaker Mike Madigan is under indictment, facing multiple federal counts of bribery and racketeering.

Federal prosecutors say Madigan was at the helm of a criminal enterprise aimed at enriching himself and increasing his political power. The indictment includes allegations stemming from an investigation of bribery involving Commonwealth Edison, the state’s largest utility.

It alleges that Madigan controlled the fate of legislation in order to secure payments to himself and his allies, and used his position to steer business to his law practice that specialized in property tax cases.
