Police Groups Seek New Legal Standards For Drone Use

Law enforcement organizations are calling for changes to Illinois law to clarify when and how police agencies can use drones.

The Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police is among the groups saying that new guidelines are needed to protect citizens from improper drone surveillance… while still giving police the tools they need to deal with crowd control or gather information in emergency situations.

Pending legislation would update various definitions under the law to permit use of drones to observe and assess subjects who may be in mental distress, as well as to set standards for the use of drone technology at “special events” in order to conduct crowd estimates and assess the safety of attendees.
