SPD Seeks ”De-Escalation” Devices In New City Budget

Springfield police could soon be getting new technology aimed at de-escalating dangerous situations without injury to the suspect or the officer.
The proposed new city budget includes funds for the department to acquire “bola wraps.” The devices shoot out a Kevlar cord that is propelled ten to 25 feet and wraps around a suspect’s arms or legs, immobilizing the person.
If approved, the budget could also provide for more in-car cameras for police squad cars and the purchase of virtual reality goggles that can be used to show teens the dangers of impaired driving.
