Antiviral Drugs To Treat COVID On Their Way To Illinois

With local COVID cases and hospitalizations at record levels, state and local health officials say help could be on the way in the form of anti-viral drugs to treat mild to moderate cases of the virus.
There are two different medications, one developed by Pfizer and the other by Merck, that can help prevent more serious illness if prescribed and taken within five days of the onset of symptoms. The drugs are intended to be used by people at the highest risk of severe COVID illness, including the elderly and those with other serious health issues.
It’s unclear how quickly the drugs will be available locally, and supplies may be limited at first.
