COVID Forces Cancellation Of Most First Night Springfield Events

For the second year in a row, COVID has forced the cancellation of Springfield’s annual New Year’s Eve celebration.

The Springfield Area Arts Council pulled the plug on most of this year’s First Night Springfield festivities Wednesday, less than 48 hours before the event was to take place. Executive director Sheila Walk says the decision was made to protect the safety of performers and attendees.

The cancellation affects afternoon children’s activities and evening entertainment at the Hoogland Center for the Arts, as well as planned entertainment at First Presbyterian Church. Any tickets already purchased can be returned for a full refund. The Friday Night Jazz event at Boone’s Saloon will go on as scheduled, and no decision had been made as of Wednesday night about Friday night’s planned fireworks display downtown.
