The City of Springfield has declared a snow emergency on designated snow routes.
That means that cars cannot be parked on those routes (from 6pm Friday) through 6am Monday morning, or otherwise, they could be towed. Sangamon County has issued a Level 1 winter weather emergency.
The declaration is a reminder to drivers that while county roads may be open, they are considered hazardous. County officials say they will continue to monitor the storm as it develops and may increase the emergency level if conditions warrant. Meanwhile, state crews are also plowing and salting roads and in some areas, they are applying beet juice to roadways.
Transportation officials say it’s environmentally friendly and enhances the snow-melting effects of their usual road salt.
