Governor-elect J.B. Pritzker is acknowledging the scope of the budget problems he’s facing, but still not offering many hints about how he’ll deal with it.
Pritzker appeared on the weekly podcast hosted by Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel. In that discussion, Pritzker said the current state budget could be as much as $2 billion out of whack, even before taking into account the state’s pension debt and the backlog of unpaid bills. He suggests that he might try to put more money toward paying down the pension liability, but didn’t elaborate.
Pritzker will have to deliver his first budget within weeks of his January inauguration.
