Trains are about to start moving faster through part of Springfield.
IDOT says train speeds on the 3rd Street corridor will begin increasing gradually starting Tuesday. That’s when the current 25 mile per hour limit will climb by five miles an hour. The limit will increase another five miles per hour each of the next two weeks until it reaches 40 miles per hour.
The changes are the result of safety upgrades in recent months, including fencing, new gates, and signal improvements. IDOT says the faster speeds will improve traffic flow and may also increase safety, since the agency says studies show slower train speeds are connected to more derailments and crossing collisions.
