Even though fall is here, state health officials say it’s still important to take steps to prevent tick bites.
A rare case of Heartland Virus has been confirmed in the Kankakee area. The disease is spread by the Lone Star tick. Heartland Virus will usually land someone in the hospital and has been fatal in some cases. Health officials say recent warm weather has led more people outdoors, increasing their risk of tick bites. Tickborne illnesses can cause fever, headaches, fatigue, muscle aches, and other symptoms.
You should keep skin covered as much as possible outdoors and use insect repellent to reduce your risk.
