It’s one of his main lines of attack against opponent J.B. Pritzker, but a fact check indicates that Governor Bruce Rauner isn’t telling the truth about Pritzker’s call for a progressive income tax in the state.
Rauner has repeatedly insisted that Pritzker’s tax plan will mean higher taxes for all Illinoisans, and says middle-class families pay higher rates in every state that has a graduated tax. But WMAY’s watchdog partners at the Better Government Association and PolitiFact Illinois rate that claim as “false.”
They note that in at least 11 states, people at the median income level pay a lower rate than they would currently in Illinois. And many states provide additional deductions and tax breaks to further lower total tax liability.
