Springfield police say it’s too soon to say if an anti-crime initiative will produce the desired results. The “focused deterrence” program identifies past offenders who are considered likely to commit more gun crimes.
They are then invited for a discussion on how their current path could land them back in prison, and on how they could choose another path.
Of ten “targets” identified this spring, Police Chief Kenny Winslow says six have already wound up back in the criminal courts. But four have so far stayed out of trouble… and Winslow says there has been a reduction in shots fired calls to police.
