You can now drop off unwanted prescription drugs at the Sangamon County sheriff’s office. The office has installed a secure Med-Return drug disposal unit in the lobby of the records division, which is open during regular business hours Monday through Friday.
Pill bottles can be deposited in the unit, no questions asked. The sheriff’s office says labels do not need to be removed from the bottles, because the unit is secure and the contents will be destroyed in an EPA-approved incinerator.
The service is intended to prevent unused prescription opioids from falling into the wrong hands.
