Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan is looking into a Chicago mayoral candidate’s handout of cash to people at what appeared to be a campaign event.
Willie Wilson says the money came from his charitable foundation… and the money went to people who need help paying their property tax bill and other expenses. Madigan’s office says it’s checking to see if the payments… and their potential link to campaign activity… violate state laws governing charitable trusts.
Governor Bruce Rauner insists he knew nothing in advance about the cash handout by his friend, Chicago mayoral candidate Willie Wilson, at an event where both politicians were in attendance. But Wilson’s campaign manager says Sunday’s event was not the first time where Rauner attended an event where Wilson distributed cash from his charitable foundation.
Both the governor and Wilson had campaign staffers on hand for the event… raising questions about whether the cash distribution may have violated state laws against “vote buying.”
