The police officer who stopped a would-be school shooter in Dixon earlier this month is rejecting the label of “hero” for his actions.
But as he was honored Wednesday at the Statehouse, Officer Mark Dallas said lawmakers have the chance to be the real heroes if they will support additional funding to hire and train more school resource officers.
Dallas chased down and then shot the suspected gunman who had begun to open fire on graduation rehearsal at Dixon High School. No other students were injured.
Governor Bruce Rauner has declared Wednesday as “Officer Mark Dallas Day” in Illinois.
