The Sangamon County Coroner confirms that the body pulled Tuesday morning from the Sangamon River is that of Shane Shomidie.
He disappeared April 20 while kayaking on the river, just days before his 30th birthday. An autopsy finds no evidence of trauma and indicates Shomidie’s death was an accidental drowning, although toxicology and other tests are still being conducted.
Police say the body apparently surfaced Tuesday in an area of the river near where Shomidie’s kayak was recovered shortly after he went missing.
A body has been recovered from the Sangamon River on the 11th day of the search for a missing kayaker.
The Sangamon County Coroner will make the formal determination on whether the body is that of Shane Shomidie, who went missing in the river on April 20th.
Hundreds of volunteers had taken part in the search for any clue as to his whereabouts.
