It sounds like something out of the 1800s… and that’s because it is. Townships across Illinois will hold their mandated annual meetings Tuesday night, where all registered voters in the township can gather for public comments.
The meetings have been a requirement in Illinois since 1850. In Capital Township, the meeting will be held Tuesday night at the Sangamon County Building at 6:01pm.
Township supervisor Tom Cavanagh says the meeting is mostly a formality, and most people don’t attend… which he takes as a sign that voters are generally satisfied with township government.
