The clock is now running for Governor Bruce Rauner to make a politically difficult decision. The legislative sponsor has lifted a “hold” and has now sent House Bill 40 to Rauner’s desk.
The bill would require state-funded insurance plans to cover abortion, and also ensures that abortion would remain legal in Illinois even if Roe v. Wade is overturned.
Rauner says he is pro-choice… but earlier vowed to veto the bill.
More recently his staff has said he is thinking it over.
But either signing or vetoing the bill is likely to create a political backlash on one side or the other.
