More Illinois families will be eligible for help with childcare expenses, under changes set to take effect to the state’s child care assistance program.
Governor Bruce Rauner has signed off on a plan to increase the threshold for aid to 185% of the federal poverty level. The change will add about 16,000 children to the program, at a cost of an additional $50M.
Rauner says the decision will help low-income families that were just hit by a 32% income tax hike, but some lawmakers say continuing to support the increase will be a struggle without reforms to the Illinois economy.
