Democratic state representative Scott Drury has announced that he will enter the race to replace Attorney General Lisa Madigan in next year’s election.
The Lake County Democrat and the former federal prosecutor said Tuesday that the state needs a “fiercely independent” attorney general. Drury had previously announced that he was stepping down from his House seat to run for governor. Madigan announced last week that she would not seek reelection, setting off speculation as to who would enter the race to succeed her.
Champaign attorney and former Miss America Erika Harold is the only announced Republican candidate.
