Springfield Mayor Jim Langfelder is urging lawmakers to approve a casino for the city… and has the backing of most, but not all, of the City Council.
Langfelder and 8 of the city’s 10 aldermen sent a letter to local lawmakers and legislative leaders asking that Springfield be added to any gambling expansion bill. They say a casino would create 500 jobs in the city and provide revenue for school facilities, fairgrounds improvements and more.
But two aldermen… Herman Senor and Joe McMenamin… did not sign the letter. McMenamin says he has multiple reasons for opposing a casino, including his view that a casino could cannibalize business from bars and restaurants that have video gaming, and his belief that a casino is not a good fit with the Lincoln sites and historic themes of downtown Springfield.
