Wednesday’s dust storms across Central Illinois are blamed for at least two deaths.
53-year-old James P Brunson of Chatham was killed in a chain reaction crash near New Berlin caused by the poor visibility on Interstate 72.
And a teenager died in a similar crash as high winds whipped up dust near Tuscola.
The National Weather Service says the unusual dust storms were only partially related to soil loosened by farmers plowing fields.
Experts say it was also a natural phenomenon as sustained winds dried out topsoil, making it easier for the wind to carry it away.
