Sangamon County’s drug-fighting unit is coming back.
Sheriff Neil Williamson is reviving the Drug Interdiction Response Team… known as DIRT for short… nearly four years after the unit was eliminated in a budget-cutting move.
Williamson made the move based on 2012 crime stats that showed increases in most crime categories, especially violent crimes.
The sheriff says many of those incidents are linked to the drug trade, and says a more aggressive approach to drugs and drug-related crime is needed.
Reinstating the three-man team will mean fewer deputies on patrol… and potentially longer wait times for citizens who call the Sheriff’s Department for help.
