Public Invited to 3rd Workshop on MacArthur Blvd, Redevelopment Plan
Public Invited to 3rd Workshop on MacArthur Blvd, Redevelopment Plan
The Regional Planning Commission and The Lakota Group will be hosting another Public Workshop for the MacArthur Blvd. Redevelopment Plan on Wednesday, September 8th, 2010 at 6:30pm at Butler Elementary School on MacArthur Blvd.
As part of the process to create a redevelopment plan for Springfield’s MacArthur Blvd. corridor, the Springfield-Sangamon County Regional Planning Commission (SSCRPC) and the Lakota Group, prime consultant for the project, will be hosting a third and final public workshop on Wednesday, September 8th, 2010 at 6:30pm. The workshop will be held at Bulter Elementary School at 1701 South MacArthur Blvd. and is opne to all interested stakeholders and citizens.
Sangamon County Board member and Project Steering Committee Chair Jennifer Dillman said that “the overall purpose of Community Workshop is to present the final planning concepts and development strategies for the future revitalization of MacArthur Blvd.” Planning concepts and land use strategies that have been crafted based on input received through the planning process will be presented according to their potential to achieve short and long-range development goals and objectives. Workshop participants will assist in refining planning concepts and strategies that will be incorporated into the final Master Plan, to be completed in September.
Dillman said that residents, business and property owners, employees and visitors are encouraged to attend the workshop to share their insights, which will be used by the consulting teams and the Steering Committee as the plan is developed.
SSCRPC Executive Director Norm, Sims, says that this third public workshop is the last of several that have been held to gain public input for the project. “The consulting team has conducted two previous community presentations including a State of the Corridor analysis presentation and a Visioning Workshop where people interested in the success of the corridor have been able to provide their input on how to improve and enhance MacArthur”, Sims said, “The consultant team also established a website at the beginning of the project to keep the larger community informed throughout the process.”
If you have a business, own property, live on or around the MacArthur Blvd, or are just an interested Springfield resident, we invite you to participate in this ongoing planning process to revitalize and enhance one of Springfield’s most important commercial corridors.
The MacArthur Blvd. project website can be found at thelakotagroup.com |

Theatre in the Park Carousel, A Rogers & Hammerstein Favourite, At Theatre in the Park
Theatre in the Park
Carousel, A Rogers & Hammerstein Favourite, At Theatre in the Park
Petersburg, IL – Theatre in the Park, at Lincoln’s New Salem State Historic Site, Proudly presents Rogers and Hammerstein’s, Carousel, August 6, 7, 8,12, 13 , 14, 15, 2010, 8:00 pm, sponsored by Mrs. Walter F. Brissenden and Mrs. Sally Robinson, and directed by John Woodruff.
In Maine Coastal village toward the end of the 19th century, the swaggering, carefree carnival barker, Billy Bigelow, captivates and marries the naïve mill worker, Julie Jordan. Billy loses his job just as he learns Julie is pregnant and, desperately intent on providing a decent life for his family, he is coerced into being an accomplice to a robbery. Caught in the act and morally injured, he is sent “up there.” Billy is allowed to return to earth for one day fifteen years later, and he encounters the daughter he never knew. She is a lonely, friendless teenager, her father’s reputation as a thief and bully having haunted her throughout her young life. How Billy instils in both the child and her mother having a sense of hope and dignity is a dramatic testimony to the power of love. It’s easy to understand why, of all the shows they created, Carousel was Rodgers and & Hammerstein’s personal favourite.
John Woodruff, director, has assembled a large cast from Petersburg, Springfield, Jacksonville, Williamsville, and Pleasant Plains.
As Always, Theatre in the Park hosts free pre-shows starting at 7:00pm in the indoor theatre each night before a performance.

The 22nd Annual Edwards Place Fine Art Fair
The 22nd Annual Edwards Place Fine Art Fair
September 18 & 19, 2010
This year the Fair will be hosting 76 artists from across the nation who work in watercolour, acrylics, photography, ceramics, fiber, glass, jewellery, metalwork, and wood. The artists find our Fair to be one of the brightest stars in their summer circuit ; more than 56 of this year’s artists are returning vendors. Among these are 2 of the SAA’s own jewellery teacher – enamellist Poppy Vincent (who has been in the fair since its inception!) and metal teacher Meghan Tippy Reese. This is her Fine Art Fair debut; we are so proud and delighted to be able to showcase her work. We are also pleased to be premiering fourteen other new artist, including 2 businesses from Springfield: Steve Brooks and Justin Behnke of Brooks Art Glass, Inc. and Susan Sitki of SueWooJewels. The Fair will also feature live music entertainment, artists’ demonstrations by SAA faculty and students, tours of Edwards Place Historic home, concessions, a used book sale to benefit the SAA’s Michael Victor II Art Library, and Pulp: Fact, Fiction and Fantasy a handmade paper exhibition in the Gallery of Art thru October 2nd.
The fair is also thrilled to host a brand new Children’s Tent with year’s festivities. Accompany your children to make a craft or two, take a photo in Munch’s The Scream photo booth, and browse the section of funky and affordable creations from Anna Williams’ awesome new youth booth.
Event Chair Bronwyn Eves and her committee have been working to make this year’s fair a success. The Fine Art Fair’s success depends on talented artists, energetic volunteers and generous sponsors. Sponsors and volunteers enable the SAA to present the Fair free to the public; there is no gate admission or parking fee. If you would like to volunteer or become a sponsor, please contact the SAA at 523-2631. |
