Illinois lawmakers approve bill to allow non-citizens to serve as police officers across state

Illinois lawmakers have approved a bill that would allow non-citizens to serve as police officers in the state.

Supporters note that non-citizens can join the U.S. military and say they should be allowed to serve as peace officers, too.

Several police organizations supported the legislation, but some Republicans objected, with one even questioning whether it would be constitutional for a non-citizen to arrest American citizens such as herself.

The bill is now on its way to Governor JB Pritzker’s desk.
