Recently purchased Springfield fire truck presents interesting quandary for new Chief Canny Jr.

One of the challenges facing Springfield’s new fire chief is the discovery that the city’s recently-purchased fire truck may be too tall for some of the viaducts in town.

That includes the viaduct at 3rd Street and Capitol Avenue, just down the street from Fire Station Number One.

The truck was purchased under the Langfelder administration, and officials under the former mayor tell WMAY the truck should make clearance, especially when it’s loaded down with equipment.

Chief Ed Canny, Jr. says the department is studying the situation and how it could impact other fire trucks that are currently on order.

For now, he says the department will simply use alternate routes to avoid any close calls with the viaducts.
